INEC Chairman Says Financial Autonomy Key to Credible 2027 Elections
INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan warned on July 24, 2026 that the commission cannot be truly independent without financial autonomy. Speaking at the public presentation of "Shadows: Protest Essays on Africa's Most Consequential Country (1999-2023)" by THISDAY Managing Director Mr Eniola Bello, he said reliance on the normal budgetary process weakens INEC's operational independence and could undermine efforts to deliver free, fair and credible elections in 2027. He stressed that while the Constitution places the electoral umpire's funding on the Consolidated Revenue Fund, the reality is that the Commission still passes through the usual appropriation process, which falls short of guaranteeing genuine independence.
