INEC clears Atiku, 470 ADC candidates for 2027 elections amid leadership dispute

INEC has officially cleared former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and 470 other candidates from the David Mark-led faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general elections. National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna confirmed on Tuesday that the commission recognizes only candidates submitted by Mark's leadership following the Supreme Court judgment validating their authority.

The cleared candidates cover 109 senatorial positions and 360 House of Representatives seats, totaling 471 elective positions including Atiku's presidential bid. The Mark-led faction gained access to INEC's candidate nomination portal after the Supreme Court ruling, while the rival faction lost its appeal for recognition.

INEC stated it will study the pending Court of Appeal judgment on ADC deregistration within 48 hours before taking an official position. Haruna emphasized the commission cannot comment until reviewing the judgment details and understanding its implications for the party's electoral participation.

This development solidifies Atiku's return to presidential politics under ADC after leaving PDP, though questions remain about the party's legal status. The cleared candidates now have access to the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections scheduled for February next year.
