INEC extends CVR by two weeks, launches online registration from July 8
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks, pushing the deadline from July 10 to Sunday, July 26, 2026. The extension, announced on Friday, July 3 by National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna, follows a review of the ongoing exercise and feedback from state offices, political parties, civil society groups and other stakeholders. The CVR exercise began on August 18, 2025. In addition to the extension, INEC has introduced a self‑service online registration option that becomes available on Wednesday, July 8 through its dedicated Continuous Voter Registration portal. The platform allows eligible first‑time voters to complete the entire registration process, including biometric capture, using personal devices such as smartphones or computers, eliminating the need to visit INEC offices physically. The portal includes robust identity verification, biometric validation and backend integrity checks to protect the credibility of the National Register of Voters. Haruna urged all eligible Nigerians who have not yet registered to take advantage of the extended period and the new digital option to ensure a credible, inclusive and accessible voter register.
This development matters because it gives millions of Nigerians additional time and a more convenient way to secure their voting rights, especially those who face mobility challenges, live far from registration centres, or prefer digital transactions.
