South African firm INFRAGORA Global Capital plans to start building two AI-ready data centres in Nigeria by Q2 2027, part of a $650 million to $1 billion investment under its AFRIDATA platform. The facilities will offer 80-100MW initial capacity, built to Tier III+/IV standards for high reliability—critical for AI workloads needing consistent power and cooling.

Beyond hardware, INFRAGORA is betting on energy independence: a 160-200MW gas-and-renewable power plant with battery storage, developed through sister company Ocha Energy, will supply the centres and potentially sell excess to the grid. The US Trade and Development Agency is funding a feasibility study, aiming to open doors for American tech suppliers.

The project includes an AFRIDATA Academy partnering with Lagos Business School and MIT to train government staff, SMEs, and young entrepreneurs in AI, machine learning, and cybersecurity—with an innovation fund for agritech, healthtech, and fintech startups. INFRAGORA says African investors will retain ownership, though US technology will power the stack.

Africa holds less than 2% of global data centre capacity, forcing businesses to rely on overseas infrastructure. Local capacity could cut latency for financial services and enterprise apps while keeping sensitive data on the continent.

With construction still a year out and funding amounts undisclosed, will this move the needle on Nigeria's digital sovereignty—or just add another announced mega-project to the pipeline?
