Inter Milan confirms death of legend Sandro Mazzola at 83, Euro 1968 winner

Inter Milan announced Saturday that club legend Sandro Mazzola has died VP at age 83. The Nerazzurri called him 'one of the greatest footballers in history' and a defining figure of their golden era.

Mazzola won four Serie A titles and back-to-back European Cups with Inter in 1964 and 1965. He scored 158 goals in 565 appearances for the club, including a brace in the 1964 European Cup final victory over Real Madrid that earned praise from Ferenc Puskás, who gave him his shirt after the match.

For Italy, Mazzola scored 22 goals in 70 appearances and was key to their 1968 European Championship triumph. He also played in the 1970 World Cup final and finished runner-up to Johan Cruyff for the 1971 Ballon d’Or. His father Valentino Mazzola, a Torino great, died in the 1949 Superga air disaster that killed 31 people including 18 players.

After retiring in 1977, Mazzola held executive roles at Inter and later served as sporting director of Torino. Inter president Giuseppe Marotta said: 'Today, another piece of the Nerazzurri legend leaves us. Sandro was Inter: he joined the club as a boy and chose to stay here forever.'
