InterSociety warns of sanctions against six governors for 2027 election intolerance
InterSociety has threatened to pursue international sanctions, including possible travel bans to Europe and the Americas, against six Nigerian governors—Charles Soludo (Anambra), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), Peter Mbah (Enugu) and Hope Uzodimma (Imo)—for allegedly promoting political intolerance and undermining opposition ahead of the 2027 elections. The group accused the governors and their allies of political exclusion, intimidation of opposition figures, abuse of state power, and shrinking civic space, citing attacks on opposition supporters in Enugu, threats against leaders in Ebonyi, attempts to restrict opposition activities in Anambra, Benue, Edo and Imo, an alleged gun attack during an NDC ward meeting in Enugu that left four injured, and claims that Peter Obi was barred from entering Benue State twice. InterSociety also questioned INEC’s independence, alleging pressure on Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan and referencing claims of a pre‑signed resignation letter, warning that problems with the voters’ register, PVC production and missing names could disenfranchise millions if not fixed. The governors have not yet responded to the allegations. InterSociety urged opposition parties to scrutinize INEC’s preparations and demand transparency, stressing that continued intolerance could draw international consequences.
