IPOB disowns lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor, warns media not to call him counsel
IPOB issued a disclaimer on September 3, 2026, stating that lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor is no longer counsel for the group or its leader Nnamdi Kanu, who sacked him from Sokoto Prison over gross incompetence and professional misconduct. The statement, released by spokesman Emma Powerful, recalled that Kanu had announced Ejiofor’s dismissal in a letter from Sokoto Prison and had also removed him as IPOB’s lawyer. IPOB accused Ejiofor of failing to provide effective legal representation in Kanu’s terrorism trial and said that since his dismissal Ejiofor has hired himself out to enemies of the leader, appearing to advocate for interest groups working against Kanu’s release. The group warned media houses that while Ejiofor may represent clients in his personal capacity, he must not be referred to as IPOB counsel, and any outlet that does so will face legal consequences. IPOB emphasized that only the legal team appointed by Kanu is recognized, labeling anyone else an impostor. It urged Biafrans to remain vigilant and reject anyone misrepresenting IPOB or undermining Kanu’s authority.
