Iran demands guarantees, reparations to end war
Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian has outlined conditions for ending the ongoing conflict with Israel and the United States, insisting that any ceasefire must be backed by international guarantees preventing further attacks on the country. He also called for financial reparations and stressed that Iran’s ‘legitimate rights’ must be acknowledged as part of any settlement. While the Iranian leader did not clearly define the rights he was referring to, analysts suggest the statement may be linked to the recent leadership transition following the death of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The position has reportedly been taken over by Mojtaba Khamenei, whose emergence as the country’s new religious leader and head of state has generated international reactions. Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump criticised the development, saying he was ‘not happy’ about Mojtaba Khamenei’s appointment. ‘I don’t believe he can live in peace,’ Trump said, without elaborating further on the remark.
