Iran executes three men linked to anti-government protests in Qom
Iranian authorities executed three men, including 19-year-old wrestler Saleh Mohammadi, in Qom on Thursday for alleged involvement in killing two security personnel during January 8 protests. The judiciary's Mizan News Agency confirmed the executions after legal procedures, including court approvals and defence representation. The men were convicted of moharebeh (waging war against God) and acting for foreign interests (US/Israel), facing death sentences under Iranian law. Mohammadi's case drew international concern, with Washington urging against his execution. Human rights groups allege torture-induced confessions and denied fair trials, with Amnesty International noting denied legal representation and expedited proceedings. The executions follow widespread protests since December 2025 over economic hardship and political discontent, with authorities responding forcefully. Independent groups report over 7,000 deaths during the crackdown, contrasting with Tehran's 3,117 figure. At least 30 individuals, including minors, face potential execution in protest-related cases.
