Iran has formally accused the United States of violating international law by issuing public threats of military action, according to a UN Security Council complaint lodged February 19, 2026. The accusation stems from a February 18 social media post by US President Donald Trump suggesting potential military strikes using facilities at Diego Garcia and RAF Fairford. Tehran claims this violates Article 2(4) of the UN Charter prohibiting force against territorial integrity. Iranian officials warn the rhetoric, combined with increased US military deployments in the region, escalates Middle East tensions and risks global instability. Despite the accusations, Iran maintains commitment to diplomatic engagement and nuclear negotiations. The complaint calls on the Security Council to urge the US to cease unlawful threats and circulate the letter as an official document. Iran reserves right to self-defense under Article 51 if attacked, warning US assets could become legitimate targets.
