Israel and Lebanon have agreed to implement a conditional ceasefire following US-led talks in Washington on June 3, 2026. The agreement hinges on a complete cessation of fire by Iran-backed Hezbollah. Both nations committed to creating pilot zones in southern Lebanon where Lebanese armed forces will have exclusive control, excluding all non-state actors.

The announcement comes amid ongoing hostilities. Recent violence includes Israeli strikes that killed at least ten people in southern Lebanon, including four Syrians, two Palestinians, and three paramedics. In response, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for rocket and drone attacks targeting Israeli positions near Chqif Castle and Al-Qantara, stating the attacks were in response to Israeli violations.

Hours after the ceasefire announcement, northern Israel sounded air raid alarms after intercepting a hostile aircraft and two projectiles crossing from Lebanon. This marks the fourth round of direct diplomacy since March 2, when Hezbollah renewed attacks on Israel in support of Iran. The fragile ceasefire now faces the challenge of sustained compliance from all parties in a region with a history of rapid escalation.

How will this conditional ceasefire affect global security dynamics, and which neighboring countries are most likely to be impacted by any potential breakdown in the agreement?
