Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon displayed a Hezbollah drone at the UN Security Council today, warning members about the growing threat of advanced unmanned aerial systems used by non-state armed groups. The drone exemplifies low-cost but highly effective technology that's changing modern warfare.

According to Danon, Hezbollah drones weigh less than two kilograms, fly low making them difficult to detect, and can travel undetected for tens of miles. They're resistant to electronic warfare and provide live video feeds for precise targeting. "These drones are cheap, precise and deadly," Danon said, noting components can be acquired through commercial online platforms.

This presentation comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, which have exchanged cross-border attacks. The display underscores growing concerns about how inexpensive drone technology is proliferating and changing the nature of armed conflict, allowing both state and non-state actors to conduct surveillance and precision attacks at relatively low cost. Should Nigeria consider similar drone proliferation in its regional security strategy?
