Israel to resume Gaza war, push Palestinian migration – Defence Minister Katz

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said on September 16, 2026 that Israel is likely to resume full-scale military operations in Gaza and pursue a plan aimed at encouraging Palestinians to leave the territory. Speaking ahead of Israel’s October 27 election, Katz noted that about 70 per cent of Gaza had already been emptied of its population due to the war. He defended the October 2025 ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump, calling it significant for facilitating the return of hostages and including a US commitment to Hamas disarmament, though he expressed doubt that the disarmament commitment would be fulfilled. Katz added that Israel is prepared to facilitate Palestinian departure by land and sea, but is awaiting discussions with the United States on where those leaving would be relocated, describing the migration as voluntary despite providing no evidence for the claim. US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee rejected the existence of any forcible removal plan, stating people would not be displaced against their will.

The renewed military push and migration proposal could further destabilise the region, affect international humanitarian efforts, and influence global oil prices and foreign aid flows—factors that may indirectly affect Nigerians through fuel costs, remittances, or humanitarian concerns. Large parts of Gaza remain severely damaged or destroyed, and nearly the entire population has already been displaced during the conflict.

Readers should follow developments through credible news outlets, consider supporting humanitarian organisations if concerned, and note that the voluntariness and relocation details of the proposed migration remain unverified per US officials. The Israeli government says it is prepared to act once given the directive, pending US talks on relocation.
