On Tuesday, September 15, 2026, an Italian fighter jet operating under NATO intercepted and destroyed a suspected Russian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that had entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus. The aircraft was shot down near the village of Pratkunai, north of Kaunas, Lithuania’s second-largest city. Lithuania’s Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas said the UAV carried explosive materials and its wreckage is under analysis to confirm origin.

The incident adds to a series of recent provocations, including Russian flares aimed at a Danish military helicopter on Monday and Russian UAVs targeting a railway facility near the Polish border on Sunday. NATO officials described the interception as proof of the Atlantic alliance’s significance, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called it part of a pattern of aggression against Europe. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul blamed Russia and pledged NATO’s unwavering resolve.
