Italy has blocked a US military aircraft from landing at the Sigonella air base in Sicily, Politico reported on Tuesday, citing an Italian government official. The plane was en route to the Middle East. According to Corriere della Sera, US bombers had planned to land last week, but their flight plan wasn't communicated to the Italian air force general staff in advance, and they lacked authorization.

The denial hinges on the 1954 bilateral treaty governing US bases in Italy, which covers logistical and technical flights but not combat or operational missions. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated permission for non-logistical flights requires parliamentary approval, which wasn't sought. He stressed that this doesn't mean Italy has closed bases to the US, emphasizing that agreements clearly distinguish between technically authorized movements and those needing specific government approval.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's office confirmed the episode but said it doesn't indicate a conflict with Washington. "Each request is carefully examined, case by case, as has always been the case in the past," the statement read. This highlights how even close allies' military access is governed by precise treaty terms and domestic approval processes.

For Nigeria, this underscores the importance of clarity in defense agreements with foreign partners. If Nigeria hosts foreign military assets or transit, understanding what operations require separate authorization—and from which domestic body—is critical for sovereign control and avoiding diplomatic friction. Should Nigeria review its own treaties to ensure similar distinctions are explicit?
