Japan will ban passengers from using power banks during flights starting April 2026, following a sharp rise in lithium-ion battery incidents. The new rules, confirmed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism, prohibit charging devices like phones and tablets with portable batteries on board. Passengers can still carry up to two batteries of 160 watt-hours or less per person, but must keep them visible and unplugged throughout flights. This follows 123 battery-related accidents in Japan in 2024, up from 47 in 2020. Airlines will enforce the rules, advising travelers to fully charge devices before boarding and reduce battery numbers. The policy aligns with ICAO deliberations and follows similar bans by carriers like Emirates and Singapore Airlines.
