Jega urges Tinubu to condemn judicial moves against 2027 opposition

Mahmud Jega, a frontline political analyst, urged President Bola Tinubu to publicly condemn judicial actions against opposition parties and distance the presidency from any perceived effort to weaken opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking on Arise Television, Jega pointed to recent judgments against the PDP, developments in the ADC, the deregistration of the NDC, and actions affecting the Labour Party, NNPP, SDPC and PRP, saying the pattern suggests a coordinated attempt to keep opposition off the ballot.

He warned that if opposition parties are blocked from contesting 2027, Nigeria's democracy is at risk, possibly marking the beginning of its end. Jega recalled 2001 when President Olusegun Obasanjo condemned a judge's order that halted an ANPP convention in Abuja, calling it "wicked" three times; that statement prompted the National Judicial Council to act against the judge. He said the presidency must now send a similar signal to protect democratic space.

The warning matters because a healthy opposition is essential for credible elections and accountability.
