Kanu’s lawyers threaten legal action over TV guest’s ‘kill Kanu’ comment
Lawyers for jailed IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu issued a press statement on Tuesday, July 20, 2026, threatening legal action against television guest Chigozie Nnabugwu and News Central Television after Nnabugwu allegedly urged the Federal Government to kill Kanu ‘for normalcy to return to the Southeast’ during a News Central TV programme. The video, posted on the station’s verified X handle on July 19, went viral. The legal team, led by Special Counsel Aloy Ejimakor, called the remark reckless, irresponsible and unlawful, saying it violates Section 24(1) of the Cybercrimes Act and may constitute incitement to violence and contempt of court. They demanded an immediate public retraction from Nnabugwu and an unqualified televised apology from News Central TV, warning that failure to comply would be treated as a pre‑action notice, with legal proceedings to follow. The lawyers also warned the broadcaster could face regulatory sanctions for breaching broadcasting codes on incitement and public order.
