Nigerian singer Kcee (Kingsley Okonkwo) has revealed that repeated award snubs left him in tears, prompting him to stop seeking validation through industry recognition. The Afrobeats artiste spoke about the emotional toll of being overlooked despite his contributions to the music industry.

The 47-year-old artiste explained that after consistent exclusion from awards, he chose to detach himself from seeking validation through awards. 'Right now, when I win awards, or you don't nominate me, I don't care. I prefer the rewards to the awards,' he said on Afrobeats Intelligence podcast.

Despite the challenges, Kcee has found success through fan appreciation. His 2024 hit 'Ojapiano' gained rapid traction on TikTok with 120,000 videos in one day. He also mentioned 'Limpopo' as his biggest record that took him to the global market. The artist, who began his career in 1999 and rose to prominence after KC Presh won Star Quest in 2002, continues to release hit songs and recently dropped his 12-track 2025 album 'Okonkwo and Sons Unlimited' featuring collaborations with Wyclef Jean, Teni, and Umu Obiligbo.

What does success in the Nigerian music industry mean to you - recognition through awards or connection with fans who actually buy and stream your music?
