Kenyan mobile clinic model proves profitable, expanding to three buses

Zuri Health scales up its mobile clinic fleet in Nairobi after first bus covered operating costs. The Kenya-based healthcare startup added two more buses—two as solar-powered self-contained clinics offering diagnostics, dental care, and cervical cancer screening; third for logistics to enable continuous operation. Unlike traditional outreach campaigns, these clinics operate daily in high-traffic areas.

Consultations start at KES 500 ($3.87), with typical visits costing KES 1,500 ($11.60) including tests and medication—significantly cheaper than private hospitals (KES 2,000-5,000+) while offering more accessibility than public facilities. Zuri generates revenue from walk-in patients, corporate clients for on-site health checks, and partnerships with insurers including Kenya's Social Health Authority, Britam, and Madison.

The model addresses healthcare access barriers by eliminating travel time costs for low-income workers. Bus locations rotate based on demand data from Zuri's digital platform. If scaled successfully, this healthcare delivery approach could transform service access in African cities. Nigerian entrepreneurs and healthcare providers should examine this replicable model for addressing Nigeria's similar healthcare infrastructure challenges.
