Kenyaproposes law to block pirated sports streams
Kenya's government has published a draft Copyright and Related Rights Bill, 2026, that would allow courts to order internet service providers to block websites streaming pirated sports and entertainment events. The bill introduces site-blocking powers specifically targeting live broadcasts where delays in enforcement can undermine broadcast rights value. It also establishes a notice-and-takedown system for online copyright infringement, similar to frameworks in the US and Europe. Platforms would need to remove infringing content upon valid takedown notices, with users retaining rights to dispute claims. The law updates Kenya's 2001 Copyright Act to address modern digital piracy, which has spread alongside streaming platforms. Broadcasters like MultiChoice argue piracy erodes revenue from expensive broadcast rights and subscription services. The bill is currently open for public comment before becoming law.
