Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) begins deploying body-worn cameras for customs officers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Tuesday as part of anti-corruption measures. The first rollout covers 350 cameras targeting customs and border control staff who frequently interact with importers and clearing agents. KRA established a Central Command Centre to oversee real-time monitoring of interactions, with dedicated servers for secure data storage. The system includes front cameras for high-quality recording and rear cameras for video calls. KRA aims to discourage bribery, reduce confrontations, and create evidence trails for investigations. The move follows years of allegations about officers facilitating fraudulent cargo clearances and manipulating tax declarations despite modest salaries. Customs is Kenya's most lucrative tax division, collecting import duties, VAT, and excise duties. KRA previously expanded data analytics and installed internet-connected cameras in factories producing excisable goods.
