Kunle Afolayan Warns Nollywood May Abandon YouTube If Dollar-to-Naira Rate Crashes
Kunle Afolayan has criticised Nollywood producers for turning to YouTube as an alternative streaming platform, arguing that it can never match the levels of Netflix or Prime but serves as a flexible starting point for beginners without resources to access major streamers or cinemas. He said producers are flocking to YouTube because of the current high dollar-to-naira exchange rate—at ₦1,400 to $1, one million views can generate about $10,000. However, Afolayan warned that if the dollar crashes to ₦200, many would abandon YouTube as returns would shrink dramatically.
This matters because exchange rate volatility directly impacts the naira earnings of creators who rely on YouTube ad revenue. A sharp depreciation of the naira (or appreciation of the dollar) would cut their income, potentially destabilising livelihoods for many Nigerian filmmakers who have embraced the platform as a low‑cost distribution channel.
Afolayan added that he prays the dollar-to-naira rate comes down, which would help the wider economy but hurt YouTube earnings.
