The Kwankwasiyya Movement issued a statement on April 1, 2026, criticizing Nigeria’s growing debt and the National Assembly’s oversight. Group spokesperson Dr Habibu Sale Mohammed accused the Federal Government of reckless borrowing and lawmakers of uncritical loan approvals. He warned the debt trend risks mortgaging future generations without transparent justification or fair resource distribution.

Mohammed expressed concern that borrowed funds appear skewed toward a particular region, deepening inequality and threatening national unity. He also argued the legislature has aligned too closely with the executive, weakening democratic checks. ‘When massive borrowing requests pass without rigorous scrutiny, it undermines representative democracy,’ he stated.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement, aligned with former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso’s NNPP faction, positions itself as a vocal opposition to current fiscal policies. Their statement calls on civil society and citizens to demand accountability, urging the government to halt indiscriminate borrowing and restore institutional independence.

Note that the statement lacks specific debt figures or concrete examples of regional bias in fund allocation. This political critique adds to ongoing debates about fiscal discipline and equitable development but does not provide new data to verify claims.

Do you believe Nigeria’s borrowing process lacks transparency? Should the National Assembly assert greater independence in approving loans?
