In Kyiv, Ukrainians are forming community cooperatives to install solar panels and batteries as backup power during Russian attacks on the energy grid. After a recent barrage cut electricity and heating for hours in -20C temperatures, residents like Denys Biletsky pooled 700,000 hryvnias ($16,200) to install solar systems on their apartment block's roof. The 400 residents now have constant heating, hot water, and working lifts, unlike buildings without backup power. However, not all residents contribute equally, with some lower-floor tenants refusing to pay. This mirrors Nigeria's own power challenges, where community solutions could address unreliable electricity. The initiative shows resilience but highlights the need for government support to prevent inequality in energy access.
