Lassa Fever Cases Drop, Deaths Rise to 109 in 2026
Nigeria's Lassa fever cases fell to 65 in Epidemiological Week 9 (Feb 23-Mar 1), down from 77 in Week 8, but deaths surged to 109 this year. The case fatality rate jumped to 23.2% from 18.7% in 2025. Bauchi, Taraba, Benue, Ondo, Edo, Plateau and Nasarawa states account for 86% of infections. The most affected age group is 21-30-year-olds, with 18 healthcare workers infected. Response includes IPC rings in Benue, active case searches, and PPE distribution. Challenges include late healthcare seeking and poor sanitation. NCDC urges year-round community awareness and healthcare worker vigilance.
