Last chance: Nigerians in South Africa to register for evacuation flights
Nigeria's Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu has issued a final warning for Nigerians in South Africa to register for evacuation flights as xenophobic violence continues with no improvement in sight. The last government-chartered flight is expected to arrive in South Africa on July 10, with another departing Johannesburg on July 7.
Two Nigerians, Musa Yunana Joe and Charles Iroegbu, have died in the unrest, prompting the government to demand South African authorities investigate and bring perpetrators to justice. The evacuation programme, which covers charter flights at no cost, has already completed four operations - the fourth flight arrived in Nigeria on July 3 after President Tinubu extended the deadline beyond June 30.
Nigerians still in South Africa are urged to complete documentation requirements immediately and take advantage of the remaining flights. The minister emphasized that while properties and investments can be replaced, lives cannot. With dozens having sought shelter at the Nigerian High Commission in late June, the situation remains dire as foreigners continue to face widespread violence since April.
