Luno Launches Crypto Prediction Markets in Nigeria, SA
Luno has launched prediction markets for cryptocurrency price movements in Nigeria and South Africa, allowing users to bet on whether Bitcoin, Ether, or Solana will finish above or below a target price within 24 hours. The new feature, developed with US partner Limitless, operates on a peer-to-peer model where users stake USD Coin (USDC) to predict price outcomes. Participation requires KYC verification, with minimum stakes starting at 3 USDC and capped at 10,000 USDC per prediction. Luno earns fees ranging from 0.03% to 3% on buy transactions and up to 1.5% on sell transactions. The rollout marks Luno's first step into derivatives, aiming to expand into perpetuals and futures later this year. Customers can cancel positions before the one-day window closes, but must accept mandatory risk disclosures. The product competes with local platforms like Bayse Markets and Roqqu, while navigating regulatory scrutiny from African authorities like Nigeria's LSLGA, which previously classified similar platforms as illegal gaming. Luno emphasizes its focus remains solely on crypto price predictions, not real-world events.
