Man held in UK for £500k fake wine scam; businesses urged to check suppliers

Published August 27, 2026, a 34‑year‑old man was arrested in Essex, UK, on suspicion of fraud by false representation after allegedly selling 55 bottles of counterfeit wine to an unsuspecting buyer for nearly £10,000 each, a total exceeding £500,000. The arrest was carried out by officers from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and the National Food Crime Unit (NFCU), with support from the Metropolitan Police. The suspect has been granted bail while the investigation continues. He is due to appear in court next month.

Senior Investigator Simon Ashwin of the NFCU warned that food fraud causes serious financial and reputational damage to legitimate businesses, urging firms to check suppliers and conduct due diligence to verify product authenticity.
