Manchester United has officially confirmed Michael Carrick as their interim manager until the end of the current season. The former midfielder, 44, is tasked with leading the Red Devils back into the lucrative Champions League. United currently sits seventh in the Premier League table, three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool and one point behind Brentford in fifth. A top-four finish guarantees Champions League qualification, while a top-five spot is likely sufficient due to strong English performances in European competitions. Carrick's first challenge is a tough local derby against Manchester City this Sunday. He replaces Ruben Amorim, who was sacked last week after a 14-month stint. Caretaker boss Darren Fletcher oversaw a 2-2 draw against Burnley and a 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton in the interim. Carrick, who won 12 major trophies during his 12-year playing career at Old Trafford, previously had an unbeaten three-game stint as caretaker in 2021. He was sacked by Middlesbrough in June last year after they finished 10th in the Championship. Will Carrick's familiarity with the club standards be enough to secure a Champions League spot, or is the job too daunting given United's current form?
