Manchester United sacked manager Ruben Amorim on Monday, just 14 months after his appointment in November 2024. The club's leadership stated they 'reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change' to give the team the 'best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.' Amorim's final days were turbulent—he publicly clashed with sporting director Jason Wilcox during Sunday's post-match press conference after a 1-1 draw with Leeds, telling the scouting department 'to do their job' and refusing to clarify his comments about transfer plans.

The Portuguese coach's brief tenure followed a difficult 2024/25 season where United finished 15th in the Premier League, though he did lead them to the Europa League final in May, losing to Tottenham Hotspur. His 14-month stint is the shortest reign of a permanent United manager since David Moyes' eight-month tenure in 2014. The club hasn't won the Premier League since Alex Ferguson's final season in 2013.

Manchester United are sixth in the Premier League with eight wins from 20 matches this season. Darren Fletcher, currently in charge of the Under-18 side, has been named interim head coach for Wednesday's match at Burnley. However, British media reports suggest Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick—both former United players—are in discussions with Wilcox about potentially joining a new backroom team.

Solskjaer previously managed United from December 2018 to November 2021, initially on an interim basis before being appointed full-time. Carrick served as his temporary replacement after his sacking. If Solskjaer returns, would this be the right appointment for United's rebuild, or should the club look beyond former players to address systemic issues behind the scenes?
