Microsoft announced a voluntary buyout programme on Monday targeting about 60,000 employees—over a quarter of its 223,000 global workforce. The offer is open to eligible staff at level 70 and below in Canada, India, the UK, and the US across AI experiences, Copilot, finance, HR, Xbox, and Windows + Devices teams. Marketing, commercial business, and security units are excluded. Employees will receive details within hours.

This follows earlier 2026 cuts: a 7% US workforce buyout (~9,000 roles) and 4,800 job cuts in July during Xbox restructuring. Microsoft forecasts $175 billion in capital expenditure for the 2026 calendar year, reflecting massive AI infrastructure investment. Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said the programme supports employees considering leaving while giving teams flexibility to adapt to changing business needs.

The move mirrors an industry-wide pattern. Oracle shed 21,000 employees globally over the past year, citing AI adoption. Meta began cutting 8,000 roles in May 2026 while ramping AI spending. The 10 largest tech layoff announcements in July alone affected over 76,000 workers globally.

For Nigerian tech professionals, this signals tightening remote opportunities at major tech firms even as AI investment surges. Microsoft maintains significant Nigerian operations—Azure, AI services, and developer programmes—but global workforce contraction may reduce hiring for international roles. Meanwhile, AI/ML skills become the primary differentiator in a shrinking market.

With big tech cutting thousands while spending billions on AI infrastructure, should you double down on AI/ML specialisation, target companies still hiring aggressively, or build solutions for local Nigerian market needs where global pullback creates openings?
