Mourinho hails Cucurella's masterclass against Yamal in Real Madrid's Clásico win
Real Madrid edged Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou on Sunday, and José Mourinho reserved special praise for left-back Marc Cucurella after he neutralized teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. Mourinho started Cucurella ahead of Álvaro Carreras specifically to counter Yamal's threat, and the Spaniard delivered—limiting the 19-year-old's influence across 90 minutes despite repeated attempts to draw a foul or booking.
"The kid is very good and difficult because, besides being good, he's clever," Mourinho said post-match. "He made multiple attempts to provoke Cucu into receiving a yellow card, yet Cucu demonstrated remarkable resilience." The manager credited rotation for keeping Cucurella fresh—Carreras featured in Wednesday's fixture, allowing Cucurella to focus entirely on the Clásico.
The win keeps Madrid's title push on track, but the tactical subplot steals headlines: a veteran manager trusting a defensively astute fullback over a more attacking option to nullify Europe's most exciting youngster. Cucurella's performance also raises questions about Spain's left-back hierarchy ahead of international duty.
Does this prove rotational depth wins big games, or did Cucurella simply have the perfect stylistic matchup against Yamal?
