MTN Group Foundation and the Gates Foundation have launched the Nigeria Maternal Health Multiplier, an AI initiative aiming to reach 500,000 women by 2030, equip 5,000 frontline health workers with digital tools, and support 500 health facilities to improve maternal care. The program, announced Tuesday at Semafor's Next three billion event during the UN General Assembly in New York, combines AI-enabled phone-based decision-support tools, affordable smartphones and mobile data for women, and improved internet connectivity at primary healthcare facilities.

This matters because Nigeria accounts for nearly 30% of global maternal deaths despite progress over the past decade, with only 59% of women completing four or more antenatal care visits—meaning warning signs often go undetected until it's too late. The initiative builds on the federal government's Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) and has secured an initial $25 million investment between 2026 and 2030 from MTN and the Gates Foundation.

Health workers will use AI tools to identify pregnancy complications earlier, while pregnant women gain access to trusted health information throughout pregnancy and postnatal periods. Coordinating Minister of Health Muhammad Pate praised the partnership for working 'with our existing health systems, rather than around them,' while Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman emphasized that AI's benefits 'depend on reaching people who might otherwise be excluded.'

With registration for the digital tools expected to begin soon through participating health facilities, will this initiative successfully bridge the gap for Nigeria's most vulnerable pregnant women, or will implementation challenges limit its reach in rural and underserved communities?
