MultiChoice will terminate Showmax subscriptions on March 31, 2026, requiring users to migrate to its sister platform DStv Stream. The decision, confirmed via email to users on Wednesday, follows the $3 billion takeover by French broadcaster Canal+ in September 2025. Showmax originals and library content will consolidate on DStv Stream, signaling cost-cutting measures to achieve sustainable growth in Africa's competitive streaming market. TechCabal first reported the restructuring on March 5. MultiChoice stated the move aligns with its goal of strengthening digital offerings and reducing duplication. Staff reductions through voluntary severance packages are planned as part of a $115 million turnaround investment. Showmax accumulated losses of approximately $429 million over three years before the takeover, despite a $309 million relaunch backed by NBCUniversal in 2024.
