Muslim group urges govt to force fuel price below N700 per litre
The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) issued a statement on Friday, June 20, 2026, urging the Federal Government to compel petroleum marketers to slash petrol prices below ₦1,000 per litre. The group argues that the recent ceasefire between Iran and the United States has eased Gulf tensions and driven global oil prices back to pre‑war levels, removing any justification for keeping pump prices high. MMWG described the current fuel cost as 'highly insensitive and inhuman,' accusing marketers of economic sabotage and calling on the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to intervene immediately. It also urged the government to order marketers to revert to the pre‑war price of ₦700 per litre, citing that other nations affected by the same conflict already enjoy lower fuel costs. While commending the Dangote Group for leading refining reforms, MMWG asked the company to champion the push for lower prices to ease Nigerians’ hardship. The group noted that religious bodies had intensified prayers for an end to the Gulf conflict, questioning why those prayers appear answered yet hardship persists. With petrol and diesel directly affecting transport, food costs and household budgets, a sustained drop below ₦1,000 could noticeably ease living expenses for millions.
