NAFDAC bans alcohol in sachets and small PET bottles, links to banditry

NAFDAC Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye linked the consumption of alcohol in sachets and small PET bottles to banditry in Nigeria during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday. She explained that alcohol poses dangers to organs like the kidneys and liver, and noted that while the sale of alcohol in containers under 200ml was approved decades ago, it has become uncontrollable, prompting the agency to ban such small-format alcohol.

The ban aims to address both public health concerns and security challenges, as indiscriminate alcohol consumption is alleged to fuel banditry activities. Adeyeye acknowledged that the restriction does not sit well with some stakeholders, but emphasized that Nigerians are increasingly worried about the future of their children amid rising substance abuse.

Enforcement of the sachet alcohol prohibition is scheduled to begin in December, according to NAFDAC’s announced plans. Retailers, distributors, and consumers should prepare for the change, as the agency will monitor compliance and penalize violations.
