NAFDAC bans sachet alcohol under 200ml, links to banditry, organ damage

NAFDAC Director-General Professor Mojisola Adeyeye said alcohol encourages banditry and damages kidneys and livers, speaking on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily interview on Wednesday. She announced that the agency is enforcing a ban on the sale of alcohol in sachets and PET bottles smaller than 200 ml, a restriction approved decades ago but which became uncontrollable as small‑package alcohol spread nationwide.

The ban targets both public health and security. NAFDAC warns that sachet alcohol is harmful to organs, especially the kidneys and liver, and that its easy availability fuels banditry and other criminal activities. Adeyeye noted that although the restriction was unpopular with some, many Nigerians are worried about the future of their children and support measures that protect youth.

Consumers should avoid buying alcohol in containers under 200 ml, and retailers must stop selling such packs immediately. NAFDAC said it will monitor compliance and apply penalties for violations. The agency encourages Nigerians to report illegal sales and to consider the health and security impacts when purchasing alcohol.
