NAFDAC launches nationwide mop‑up to remove sachet alcohol and sub-200ml alcohol bottles

NAFDAC has launched a nationwide mop‑up operation to remove alcoholic beverages sold in sachets and PET bottles smaller than 200 millilitres from circulation. The enforcement, announced in a statement issued on Wednesday, teams are conducting simultaneous operations across the six geopolitical zones, targeting markets, motor parks, retail outlets, bars and other distribution points to identify, seize and destroy the prohibited products. The agency urged manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, transporters and hawkers to voluntarily surrender any remaining stock, warning that anyone found producing, stocking, transporting or selling these items faces regulatory sanctions, product seizure and possible prosecution. NAFDAC stressed that the exercise is not aimed at compliant manufacturers but at products that violate existing regulations and pose public‑health risks, especially the easy access of cheap sachet alcohol to minors, which contributes to underage drinking, poor academic performance and long‑term health issues. The agency called on the public to report violators and avoid purchasing or consuming the banned items, emphasizing that the effort is part of a sustained campaign to protect children and promote responsible adult drinking.
