NAHCON probes caterers after Saudi rejects pilgrim meals over safety concerns
NAHCON has launched investigations into catering companies and tour operators following Saudi health authorities' rejection of dinner meals served to Nigerian pilgrims on May 27 due to poor handling and packaging standards. The affected meals were immediately withdrawn after failing routine health inspections, with alternative refreshments provided to cushion the impact. NAHCON Chairman Ismail Yusuf directed investigations into both the caterers involved and officials linked to contract awards, while also probing tour operators accused of bringing more pilgrims than officially registered. Refunds are being arranged for affected pilgrims, and NAHCON board members have visited state officials and pilgrim camps to explain the situation. Those found guilty of violations face penalties and potential license withdrawal. 'Saudi authorities continue enforcing strict food safety standards to safeguard pilgrims, especially amid harsh weather conditions,' NAHCON stated, appealing for calm while reassuring pilgrims of ongoing efforts to protect their welfare throughout the Hajj exercise.
