Naira gained N8.21 against the US dollar in the official market during the first week of September 2026, closing at N1,321.22/$ on Friday, September 4 compared to N1,329.43/$ at month's start. Meanwhile, the black market rate remained flat at N1,400/$ in Abuja's Wuse Zone 4 according to Bureau de Change operators.

This appreciation coincides with Nigeria's foreign exchange reserves rising to $54.08 billion on September 3, up from $53.81 billion the previous month. The official market gain contrasts with stagnation in the parallel market where forex scarcity persists, creating a N78.78/$ premium between the two rates.

For importers, exporters, or anyone needing foreign currency, this official rate improvement may reduce transaction costs if accessing bank channels—though the persistent black market premium indicates continued limitations. Will you time your forex purchases to leverage the official market rates or continue relying on parallel market sources given the current divergence?
