NANS rejects reported ₦50k WAEC/NECO fee hike, calls it insensitive to economy

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has rejected reports that the Federal Ministry of Education approved raising WAEC and NECO registration fees to ₦50,000 each, making the combined cost ₦100,000 for students taking both exams. According to Great Ozozoyin, NANS President Akinteye Babatunde Afeez called the move insensitive to Nigerians' economic struggles and criticized the lack of consultation with student bodies.

This development affects millions of students and families across Nigeria who are already feeling the pinch of ongoing economic reforms and rising living costs. NANS argues that if authorities cannot make these essential examinations more affordable and accessible, they should refrain from introducing policies that would further burden students and parents financially.

The student body insists the decision was made unilaterally without involving the National Association of Nigerian Students, which they describe as the apex body representing Nigerian students nationwide. NANS demands the Federal Ministry of Education immediately reverse the reported fee hike and engage student representatives in all future education policy decisions affecting youth, vowing to continue advocating for student welfare nationwide.
