NANS tells FG to stop Learner ID rollout, insists NIN enough for students

NANS has urged the Federal Government to immediately stop the rollout of the National Learner Identification Number (LIN), arguing that the existing National Identification Number (NIN) is sufficient for Nigerian students. In a statement signed by its President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, the student body described LIN as an unnecessary duplication of Nigeria's current identification system.

The association stated there's no justification for imposing another identification number on students when NIN already exists as the nationally recognised means of identification. NANS urged the government to strengthen and maximise the existing NIN system instead of creating a parallel structure. They emphasized that students were not consulted before the LIN policy was introduced, despite it directly affecting their education, identity, academic records and welfare.

NANS also faulted the National Orientation Agency (NOA) for overstepping its responsibilities by promoting the proposed LIN policy, saying the agency should focus on improving government-citizen communication rather than pushing policies that add pressure on students. The association maintained that any policy affecting millions of students must be developed through proper consultation and involvement of student representatives.

Recall that the Federal Government formally launched the nationwide LIN system in April 2026. NANS is now calling for an immediate halt to LIN implementation, engagement with student representatives, and focus on strengthening existing national identification systems.
