NASS extends 2025 budget capital expenditure deadline to Sept 30, 2026
The House of Representatives approved a three-month extension for implementing the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act, shifting the deadline from June 30 to September 30, 2026. The emergency plenary session passed “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Appropriation (Repeal and Enactment) Act, 2025 to Extend the Implementation of the Capital Aspect of the Appropriation Act, 2025 from 30 June 2026 to 30 September 2026” after clause-by-clause consideration in Committee of Supply. House Leader Julius Ihonvbere (APC, Edo) stated the extension provides additional time for ongoing capital projects captured in the budget.
This marks the third time the National Assembly has prolonged the 2025 budget’s capital expenditure deadline—first extended in December 2025, then again in March 2026 to June 30, 2026. The Senate had already approved a similar measure, so harmonization is expected before transmission for presidential assent. Speaker Abbas Tajudeen announced passage via overwhelming voice vote support, with the House adjourning plenary until July 7 per its legislative calendar.
The extension affects all federal ministries, departments and agencies executing capital projects nationwide, potentially delaying public infrastructure benefits while allowing more time for project completion.
