NDC appoints Southeast state caucus heads ahead of 2027 primaries
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has named key political leaders to serve as caucus heads across the Southeast geopolitical zone, as disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by National Secretary Barrister Ikenna Alex-Morgan Enekweizu. For Abia State, the caucus head is former NDDC Board Chairman Chief Onyema Ugochukwu; Ebonyi State is led by former Governor, Minister and Senator Dr. Sam Egwu; Enugu State by former Governor and former PDP National Chairman Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo; Imo State by former Governor and Minister Chief Achike Udenwa; and in Anambra State, the process is coordinated directly by Peter Obi’s team. The party said these leaders were entrusted with conducting stakeholder consultations, building consensus, and making recommendations based on the political realities in their respective states, while grassroots leaders and other stakeholders also participated. The NDC emphasized that aspirants who disagreed with caucus recommendations remain free to contest through the party’s democratic process, noting that such opportunities were provided during the just-concluded primaries and that the National Secretariat only receives aspirants and directs them to engage with caucus leaders, stakeholders, and party members at the state level. The party called on caucus leaders, state chairmen, stakeholders, and other leaders to engage aggrieved aspirants and members to ensure continued growth and stability of the NDC. This structure reveals how the NDC intends to manage internal consensus and candidate selection as it positions itself for the 2027 general elections, giving Southeast voters clear points of contact for party influence and decision-making.
