NDC leader Dickson says foes seek excuses to scatter opposition after court win

NDC national leader Seriake Dickson warned that opponents are hunting for flimsy excuses to fracture Nigeria’s opposition parties, speaking on Channels Television's 'Sunday Politics'. His remarks followed a Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja, Kogi State, which ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a legitimate political party. Dickson cited the earlier case of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where a figure named Nafiu Gombe appeared during the party's National Executive Committee meeting as leaders were being appointed, as an example of such tactics. He emphasized that the NDC has worked hard to present credible, dynamic leaders and described the current challenge as worrying for the health of the opposition. The ruling affirms the NDC's legal right to exist and contest elections, but Dickson warned that efforts to destabilise the party could weaken overall opposition strength ahead of the 2027 general elections. He urged Nigerians to watch for similar legal challenges aimed at fracturing opposition groups and to support transparent, fair party registration processes. Vigilance, he said, helps preserve a competitive political landscape that offers voters genuine choice.
