Nigeria's Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has endorsed a joint statement with 60 global data authorities addressing AI-generated imagery privacy risks. The statement, coordinated by the Global Privacy Assembly, highlights concerns over non-consensual AI imagery, deepfakes, and identity manipulation affecting children and vulnerable groups. It calls for organizational safeguards, transparency, and compliance with data protection laws. This aligns with Nigeria's National AI Strategy and NDPC's General Application and Implementation Directive (GAID), which mandates privacy-by-design for AI tools. The NDPC also launched an investigation into Chinese e-commerce platform Temu over potential mishandling of 12.7 million Nigerian users' data. This regulatory push follows the NDPC's February Temu probe and emphasizes Nigeria's growing commitment to responsible AI deployment.
