Nigeria's Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched a formal investigation into global e-commerce platform Temu, alleging breaches of the Nigeria Data Protection Act. The probe follows concerns about Temu's data processing practices, including potential online surveillance, failure to adhere to data minimisation principles, transparency obligations, and cross-border data transfer protocols. Temu handles personal data of 12.7 million Nigerian users and 70 million daily active users globally. The NDPC's investigation aims to safeguard Nigerian privacy rights and enforce compliance standards. Third-party data processors face liability warnings for non-compliance. This action underscores Nigeria's commitment to data protection enforcement in the digital economy.
