Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the military to expand control of Gaza to 70% of the territory, up from the current 60%, according to remarks aired by Israeli Channel 12 today. This directive exceeds the boundaries set in a US-brokered ceasefire agreement from October 2025.

The expansion raises immediate concerns for Gaza's more than 2 million residents, many already displaced multiple times during the ongoing conflict. Humanitarian agencies report severe conditions including shortages of clean water, inadequate sanitation, and overcrowded shelters. At least 10 people, including four children, were reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike today, with others wounded.

International organizations and diplomatic actors continue calling for civilian protection and increased humanitarian access. The latest developments are expected to intensify international scrutiny of Israel's military strategy and could complicate ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the conflict that began after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on southern Israel.
