NHRC Chief Calls for More Women on Nigeria's Bench
Tony Ojukwu, Executive Secretary of Nigeria's National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), urged increased female representation in the judiciary during International Day of Women Judges 2026. Speaking on March 10, Ojukwu emphasized women judges' critical role in strengthening justice systems and promoting access to justice for all. He noted their presence enhances legitimacy, credibility, and inclusiveness of justice systems, making justice more responsive to citizens' needs. Despite global progress, women remain underrepresented in judicial leadership positions. Ojukwu stressed the need for sustained efforts to remove structural barriers limiting women's participation in legal professions and called for stronger policies supporting their advancement. The NHRC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality within the justice system and ensuring greater access to justice for all.
